Pizza with Arugula

Make this pizza with arugula, pears and blue cheese, These ingredients also make a delicious arugula pear salad.

Pears are mostly made into something sweet which I love but I also love when they are served in a savory dish and this pizza is a super flavorful way to try pears for a lunch or supper main dish. There are so many varieties of pears, you might be wondering which ones to use. Here is a little primer on pear varieties, I hope that it is helps you decide which ones to choose Little Pear Primer.

Keep this pizza recipe on hand during the holidays for a tasty supper or you could make bite sized pizzas for a sweet little appetizer!

Pears are a great source of fiber and they also contain a little vitamin C, B6 and magnesium. When they are “paired” with arugula they give the added benefits of vitamin A. I love the fact that arugula is very hardy and grows almost all winter long in my garden!

Pear Arugula Pizza with Blue Cheese and Walnuts

Makes 2 mini pizzas at 8 inches in diameter. Servings 4 at 2 small slices each or 2 servings at 4 small servings. Use your favorite gluten free or low fodmap crust if needed and for a total plant based version, drizzle a little additional fig jam on top after baking and skip the cheese!

1/2 cup Blue Cheese, crumbled

2 pears, sliced (I used Bartlett pears)

1 cup arugula, washed

¼ cup walnuts

1-2 tablespoon Rosemary Fig Jam to drizzle over crust (see below)

Pizza Crust (enough for 2 eight inch pizzas see below or use two prepared Naan breads). I used half of a recipe of my husband’s pizza crust recipe below to make these little pizzas and I also used all white flour.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Make pizza crust, cover in a greased bowl and allow to set about 15 minutes. Divide crust into half and made 2 eight inch pizzas and place on a cookie greased cookie sheet. Drizzle fig jam on the crust, add sliced pears, walnuts and blue cheese. Bake for about 10-15 minutes until crust is cooked and walnuts are browned and cheese is starting to cook. Take out of oven and top with arugula.Cut into slices

The balsamic rosemary fig jam that I used was a gift that my friends in Napa Valley made and gave to my husband and I. It makes wonderful as a glaze for the pizza before adding the toppings. If you don’t have a jar in your fridge, I have included a recipe below and also have included a place where can purchase purchase online.

Pears go well with the rest of the pizza ingredients and provide a little sweet to the pungent and salty flavor of the blue cheese. If you need a few more tasty recipes using pears, try the Roasted Butternut Pear & Arugula Salad, Oven Pear Pancake and Pear Bread Pudding in the blog posts below!
